That’s a question our teams get asked by ministers, Senior Civil Servants, CEO’s and Chairs every single day, and now we’re giving you the opportunity to join them through our graduate scheme! We have a trusted place in Government as a centre of expertise for corporate governance, bringing together the best of the public and private sector to manage a portfolio of 24 companies, public bodies and other interests for the UK Government.

This is a 12-month graduate placement, during which you will gain experience across our corporate governance practice. You will spend around 70% of your time in ‘shareholder teams’, responsible for organisations such as The Royal Mint, British Business Bank and HM Land Registry. You will have the chance to work on up to three of these across the 12-month placement, where you will be involved in anything from attending meetings with the senior team, reviewing information going to the Board, and supporting the team to write advice for ministers on governance matters or even recruiting new Chairs to lead the organisations. The rest of your time will be spent as a member of our internal Governance teams where you will help research and develop best practice and work with teams across UKGI to manage important projects. No two days will be the same, it is a truly varied role which in part will be built around your interests.

Our main aim throughout will be to provide you with your own bespoke learning and development programme, with regular opportunities to meet and learn from senior people across the organisation. You will also have your own buddy and mentor to help you settle into the role, as well as the collaborative and friendly team of circa 150 colleagues. By the end of the programme, you will have developed your skills to pursue a career in either the public or private sector with confidence.

A Day in the Life

At UKGI, one day is never quite the same as the next. In this role you’ll be working both as a team and individually to support organisations of national importance wherever you can across your assigned portfolio. This could be helping to create agendas for meetings with your portfolio organisations and deciding on the key questions to ask, working with other teams at UKGI to draw on their experience and solve issues, and helping to ensure we work with our assets in the best possible way for the public good. Our graduates really enjoy the variety their role gives them, as well as the opportunity to learn from both their private sector and civil service colleagues.

We don’t require you to have a specific degree, what we’re looking for is a keenness and ability to learn and get involved in multiple projects at once, and an interest in working for government.

You will be able to quickly assimilate a range of guidance and evidence and think creatively about problems.
You will have the ability to communicate and influence a range of stakeholders and work collaboratively within a team.
